House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries became the first African American to lead a party in Congress after he was unanimously elected the House Democratic Leader by his colleagues in November 2022. He is serving in his sixth term representing the diverse 8th Congressional District of New York which encompasses large parts of Brooklyn.
