Five federal detainees being held at the Montgomery City Jail tested positive Tuesday for COVID-19, and one other detainee is awaiting results, according to the Montgomery Police Department.
WSFA first broke news of the confirmed COVID-19 cases Tuesday afternoon. MPD spokesman Capt. Regina Duckett in a response to APR on Tuesday said the detainees have been isolated from the general population and are receiving proper medical care.
“Three correctional officers and two nurses were confirmed to have COVID-19 and will not be allowed to return to work until they are cleared by a physician per CDC guidelines. It is unknown how the virus was contracted,” Duckett said in the message.
No municipal jail detainees have confirmed cases of COVID-19, and none have presented with symptoms to be tested, Duckett said.
