Montgomery County has had its first death from COVID-19, according to Monique Smith with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.

Smith confirmed to APR by phone Monday that a person from Montgomery County, who had tested positive for COVID-19, has died, and that she is waiting for the Alabama Department of Public Health to confirm the death as primarily due to the novel coronavirus.

Smith said that she doesn’t know the person’s age or where they lived, and so she couldn’t provide further information on the death.

As of Monday afternoon, there were 26 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Montgomery county, 921 statewide and six deaths, although ADPH was investigating others as possibly related to COVID-19

EAMC in Opelika has reported six deaths related to COVID-19, but the Alabama Department of Public Health has only confirmed one of them.
