Electronic tablets come in all shapes, sizes and prices, but they are yet another way you can carry the digital world with you and use it wherever you are — and whenever you need it.

One of the places electronic tablets can be used is in schools.

Two Alabama Republicans — Sen. Gerald Dial of Lineville and Rep. Jim McClendon of Springville — want to make the devices available to public-school students in grades 9-12.

Dial and McClendon have a novel idea. The state would sell up to $100 million in bonds to buy the technology.

Selling bonds is the traditional way the state can go into debt to get what it needs without violating the “balanced budget” provision of the state Constitution. Alabama has sold bonds for a variety of things, mostly large construction projects. To sell bonds to buy educational equipment is an interesting idea.
