States seek delays immigration law hearings

Alabama and Georgia Thurs­day asked the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to stop proceedings against their state immigration laws while the U.S. Supreme Court reviews challenges to Arizo­na’s immigration statute.

Alabama argues that the Ari­zona judgment will likely be “the definitive decision on many of the matters at issue in these cases” and would likely be in hand by July.

“It would not be in the inter­ests of judicial economy for the parties and amici (briefs submit­ted as friends of the court) to sup­ply three more rounds of briefing on these issues to this Court (the Appellees’ briefs, the Appellants’ replies, and the Cross-Appellants’ replies in the cross-repeals), only to have their briefs become obso­lete this summer,” says the mo­tion, written by the Alabama attor­ney general’s office.
