Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has been hospitalized due to COVID-related pneumonia, according to his doctor and city officials. In a tweet from the city of Birmingham, Woodfin’s doctor said he was admitted to the hospital Monday night “to address symptoms connected to COVID pneumonia.”

The tweet said the mayor is “receiving excellent care and is resting comfortably” and “remains in good spirits and thanks everyone for the well wishes.”

Woodfin said a week ago that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was experiencing only mild symptoms.

“Remember, everyone – COVID is real,” Woodfin said in his Dec. 30 tweet.

Mayors for Decatur, Auburn and Florence have all announced this week that they’ve contracted COVID-19. Alabama reached a new record for COVID-19 hospitalizations on Monday, with more than 3,000 new patients in hospitals across the state, an increase of 50 percent.
