Gov. Kay Ivey’s former press secretary Daniel Sparkman, who stepped down from his position last week, is expected to announce his bid for the open Alabama House seat in Montgomery made vacant by the death of Republican State Rep. Dimitri Polizos, who died in March.
Sparkman, who served in Ivey’s office as press secretary since July 2017, will announce his bid on the steps of the Statehouse at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
He previously served as deputy press secretary and in other positions in Gov. Robert Bentley’s office since 2014. Before that, he was an anchor and producer at WVUA-TV in Tuscaloosa and as a producer at WSFA 12 in Montgomery.
At least seven candidates have qualified to run for the House seat in Montgomery. The district includes parts of north and east Montgomery.
The primary is scheduled for June 11 and the general election will be in August or November. Ivey announced the election on April 1.
