In Lowndes County, 15 percent of survey respondents reported that they had a failing onsite sanitation system or no wastewater treatment at all.

The funds were made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The 13 new investment projects will improve water and sewer systems, update transportation infrastructure and support entrepreneurship.

Many of the approximately 1,200 water and sewer systems in Alabama have significant repair and upgrade needs.
