Incumbents and moderates were challenged by a slate of outsider candidates.

Incumbency is a potent, powerful, inherent advantage, especially in legislative races.

It’s hard to beat an incumbent. It takes lots of money, moxie and muscle.

In addition to the nine incumbents who lost, three in the Alabama House appear headed for runoffs.

The association has endorsed Andy Whitt, Scott Stadthagen, David Faulkner, Anthony Daniels and Jeff Sorrells.

Birmingham Council President William Parker and incumbent Councilman John Hilliard lost their bids for re-election.

The problem is the Democratic Party of Alabama. An awful mess looks better. In Tuesday’s elections, Republicans won top to bottom in statewide and congressional races  that had credible Democratic Party challengers.
