Alabama CD-6 Democrats to face voters at primary forum
After redistricting upended the primary, voters will get a closer look at Democrats seeking to challenge a six-term Republican incumbent.
Mid-election Republican redistricting threw Alabama’s 2026 primary election into confusion, but it also drew new Democratic challengers in Congressional District 6, where four candidates are seeking the party’s nomination.
The candidates are Jacob Bouma-Sims, Ashtyn Kennedy, Maurice Mercer and Keith Pilkington.
Congressional District 6 voters can meet all four candidates at the North Jefferson County Democrats’ primary candidate forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, in the Round Auditorium at the Homewood Public Library.
Democratic secretary of state candidate Wayne Rogers will help moderate the discussion.
“We have a six-term GOP incumbent in CD-6, and many voters want change in Washington,” North Jefferson County Democrats Chair Jennifer L. Greer said. “This forum gives them a chance to hear from the Democratic candidates before voting in the August 11 special primary.”
In Jefferson County, many voters east of Interstate 65 live in Congressional District 6. A portion of the area, however, moved between Congressional District 6 and Congressional District 7 during the legally contested redistricting process.
Congressional District 7, represented by U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, includes much of western Jefferson County. The redistricting resulted in the spring Congressional District 6 primary being nullified.
Voters may verify their congressional district and registration status by visiting the Alabama secretary of state’s VoterView website and entering their information.
