Crews will block a stretch of the Gulf Shores roadway starting Monday to install painting equipment and widen lanes for the Intracoastal Waterway project.
The Alabama Department of Transportation said Wednesday it continues to make steady progress on the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge project in Gulf Shores.
Contractor Scott Bridge Company will close a portion of Canal Road for five days beginning Monday, February 23, 2026, to install bridge painting equipment for steel girders over Canal Road, widen the roadway east of the bridge and complete paving near the south roundabout at Canal Road.
Canal Road will close at 6:30 a.m. Monday, February 23, and remain closed through 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 27. Crews will use the closure to install girder painting equipment, widen part of the roadway and pave near the roundabout. Detour signs will direct drivers to use County Road 4, or Cotton Creek Drive, as an alternate route.
The project aims to reduce congestion on State Route 59, improve access to emergency services in Gulf Shores and surrounding areas, enhance safety during evacuations—especially during hurricanes or other emergencies—and support economic growth by improving connectivity and transportation efficiency.
The department and Scott Bridge Company said they appreciate the public’s patience during the roadwork.
