Montgomery police chief placed on leave

On Monday, Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed announced that Chief of Police Darryl Albert was placed on administrative leave. Albert became chief of police in 2022.

No reason was given as to why Albert was placed on administrative leave but the City of Montgomery said, “the reason for the leave will be announced when the matter is concluded.”

While it is not mentioned in the city’s announcement, a former MPD officer accused Albert of sexual harassment, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. René Helton believed she was fired from the department in November for refusing sexual advances made by Albert.

Helton has since filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which investigates cases of discrimination.

However, it is undetermined whether this is why Albert has been placed on leave, that information will only be available following the conclusion of the city’s investigation.
