On Wednesday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will visit Birmingham to recognize an infrastructure award, and Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, will be there to welcome him.
The award amount totals $14.5 million and is allocated to help reconnect parts of the community affected by past transportation decisions. The investment is part of funding from the Biden administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Black communities have been plagued historically with the ramifications of racist infrastructure policies as noted by experts and articles.
Examples include interstate highways being constructed through Black communities, bad roads, and Black residents being in proximity to waste and polluters. Addressing this history is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s goals.
Alongside Sewell and Buttigieg, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin will be in attendance to highlight the grant.
