Federal prison guard indicted for assaulting Alabama inmates

A federal grand jury indicted a Bureau of Prisons correctional officer on Thursday on two counts of sexually abusing two female inmates. 

Officer Robert D. Smith was accused of assaulting two incarcerated persons – identified only as “T.M.” and “R.-R-L” by the DOJ – and that he knowingly engaged in sex acts with the two individuals who were under his direct supervision. 

The alleged crimes took place at the Federal Correctional Institution at Aliceville, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice. If convicted, Smith faces up to 15 years in prison for each charge, up to three years supervision and $250,000 in fines.
