An incarcerated man at St. Clair Correctional Facility was confirmed dead on Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Timothy Sanderson, a 57-year-old incarcerated man at the facility, was pronounced dead after being found in the shower in his dorm, the spokesperson said in a statement. After being transferred to the health care unit, medical staff there were unable to revive Sanderson, and he was pronounced deceased.

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, with a cause of death pending an autopsy and the conclusion of this investigation.

Sanderson is the first incarcerated individual confirmed dead at the facility this February, and the first since Corey Jerome Johnson, a 49-year-old incarcerated man at the St. Clair County facility, to be confirmed to APR.

A source within the Alabama corrections system with knowledge of the incident involving Johnson told APR in January that Johnson’s death was a suicide, but this has yet to be confirmed by the ADOC or the coroner’s report.

Johnson had been found in his cell unresponsive, and all attempts to revive him failed, according to a statement from the ADOC at the time.
