Pardons and Paroles providing Naloxone training to officers

The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles is now providing training for Naloxone – most commonly known as NARCAN — to all Bureau officers via the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose.

Bureau officers may need to assist someone experiencing an opioid overdose during the performance of their duties. Additionally, law enforcement officers may be accidently exposed to opioids such as fentanyl. Opioids are substances such as heroin, fentanyl, or prescription pain medication.

Bureau Director Cam Ward said, “I’m pleased to offer Naloxone trainingto protect our officers and those they may come in contact with who are experiencing a medical emergency due to an opioid exposure. This isanother valuable tool for providing increased public safety for Alabama communities.”
