New unemployment claims increased again last week

Sixty-seven percent of the new claims were estimated to be related to the pandemic.

There were 16,506 new unemployment claims filed last week, according to the Alabama Department of Labor, up from 13,592 the previous week.

Of the new claims, 11,035 are estimated to be related to COVID-19, representing 67 percent. That compares to 57 percent of the previous week’s claims.

It is the highest number of claims filed in one week since July.
