About half of the new claims are due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
There were 11,615 new unemployment claims filed during the week of Jan. 17 to Jan. 23, according to the Alabama Department of Labor. Of those, 5,708 are estimated to be related to COVID-19, representing 49 percent.
The figure is down from 11,983 the previous week.
