Governor issues order to aid cities in hunt for election workers amid COVID-19

Gov. Kay Ivey on Friday issued another supplement to her state of emergency proclamation in an effort to ease burdens on municipalities that are struggling to find election workers due to COVID-19. 

Current state law mandates that election workers live in the municipality in which they’ll be working the polls, and Ivey’s supplemental order Friday allows municipalities to recruit poll workers from anywhere in the county or county where the municipality is located. 

Ivey’s order also allows for election worker training to be done online or by phone. Both changes will only be in effect for the state’s Aug. 25 municipal elections and the Oct. 6 municipal election runoffs, according to Ivey’s order.
