Bentley awards grants to fight illegal drugs

Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded $684,300 in grant money to combat illegal drugs and drug-related crime in 10 counties, primarily in west Alabama.

The money will go to drug task forces that operate in Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Fayette, Hale, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, Shelby and Wilcox counties.

The city of Tuscaloosa will use a $210,000 grant to fund the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force, the multi-agency unit that coordinates drug enforcement efforts in the county. Local matching funds of $70,000 have been committed, according to a release from Bentley’s office.
